Gaza is a small strip of territory on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea that borders
Egypt and Israel.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 uprooting thousands of Jews from their homes
leaving the area unpatrolled for the first time since 1979.
Hamas is the Palestinian Islamic fundamentalist movement that became the governing
political party of Gaza after Israelʼs withdrawal.
Hamasʼ political rise to power resulted in a terrorist infiltration of Gaza and the influx of
hundreds of tons of ammunition and weaponry (rockets and mortars) from all over the
Arab world, subsequently launched at Israeli civilians.
In 2009 Israel engaged in a three-week armed conflict in the Gaza Strip with Hamas
fighters, known as Operation Cast Lead, to stop the rockets.
On July 8, 2014 Hamas began launching rockets at major cities and towns all over
Israel, from Beersheba to Haifa and including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Over a thousand rockets have been fired at Israel since then.
In response, Israel launched Operation Protective Edge is to stop the rocket attacks.
