Cheshvan: The Power of Silence

Posted on November 4, 2014

Sukkos has passed and the holidays are over. We are now in the Hebrew month of Cheshvan which feels empty, or silent – it is the only month that has no holidays and no special mitzvos associated with it. In fact, “Cheshvan” comes from the Hebrew root “chash” which means silence.

Does that mean that Cheshvan is an empty month with nothing going on? Not at all! In Jewish thought, silence is actually a positive concept of its own. Silence demonstrates wisdom. Silence sustains the world. Silence makes you into a more Godly being because God is the most silent One of all.

What role does silence play in your life? Why is silence so powerful? Take a moment to reflect on how to incorporate the power of silence in your life.
